Kinda - Facebook launches its own App Store

Facebook launches own App Store - kindaHere's one of those stories that caught our eye immediately and then made us wonder why we were even surprised. Facebook is launching its own App Store. Bandwagon, much?

Well, we say that but it's actually an App Store with a difference in that Facebook won't be providing the apps, merely acting as a kind of virtual online pimp.

Known as the App Center (original), the hub will do the job of highlighting apps that work with Facebook that users can then download to their phones. The actual process of downloading the app will still be done via the likes of Google Play for Android or the iOS AppStore which the App Center will direct users to.

Some of the apps earmarked already are the likes of  Draw Something, Pinterest, and Nike+ GPS which are established favourites. On top of that, there are some newer, less well-known additions like Jetpack Joyride, Ghosts of Mistwood, and Ghost Recon Commander. And true to the social nature of Facebook, the Center will recommend to you apps that friends are also using.

Predictably, the App Center isn't available in the UK yet. As you can see by the spelling, it's an American name and the US is where it'll be launching first - in fact, it's online now. But we fully expect Blighty to get a friendly invite (see what we did there) in the not-too-distant future.
