AMD low-power chips would feature in Windows 8 tablets

There seems to be a consensus. AMD's latest Trinity APU fails to land any serious hits against Intel's Ivy Bridge chip, especially if the Intel CPU is paired with a discrete graphics chip from Nvidia or even AMD itself.

However, the company has done a good job lowering the power consumption of its processors and this could pay off when PC vendors start looking at processor options for Windows 8 tablets later this year.

Quoting "sources from the upstream supply chain", Digitimes has reported that AMD is scheduled to release its Hondo chips, which are rated at 4.5W, in the fourth quarter. This is in line with the roadmap AMD released in February. Microsoft's new operating system will reportedly launch in that same quarter in October.

These Hondo chips also boast DirectX 11-capable graphics, though we doubt that it will run anything more demanding than casual games. AMD's chips currently hold the advantage over Intel's integrated graphics solution, and as these low-power tablets are unlikely to have discrete graphics, it could give AMD the edge over its Intel Clover Trail-based rival.
